Anger is an Emotion. There are many other emotions, as well. In fact, scientists have conclusively determined to everyone's satisfaction that emotions, or at least their biological equivalent, is a fundamental feature of most, if not all, forms of life. We have suggested that Emotions are the mixture of Body and Mind. The Mind perceives something. Due to instincts and/or conditioning, the Body then excretes a chemical cocktail (hormones and such) to deal with the situation. We’ve chosen to indicate this situation with the following algebraic expresssion.
Body * Mind = Emotions
This equation indicates that there is both a Mental and Physical component to Emotion. A significant subset of scientists believe that the Mental component is entirely physical – a purely chemical interaction. If Mind is entirely physical, the above equation has no meaning other than that material interactions create our emotional universe. This belief is at the heart of the current scientific mindset.
In contrast, this study is based upon the assumption that living systems have both a physical and component that digests information. The atom-based Body is our referent to the physical component. The thought-based Mind is our referent to the information-digesting component. According to the theory developed in Behavioral Dynamics, mental energy transforms the flow of information into a form of info energy. When this info energy accumulates enough density, it translates into the physical energy that is required to interact with the physical universe. Accordingly Mind, as we are using the word, has no physical component. Although Mind, in this context, is not physical and Body is not based in information digestion, mental energy is converted into physical energy via the digestion of information. This entire process occurs on the same subatomic levels where atomic matter comes into existence. There is an abundance of evidence (both experiential and experimental) that supports this approach and simultaneously negates the exclusively material mindset.
Because the interaction of Mind and Body creates Emotion, it is imperative to deal with both components to neutralize the deleterious effects of negative emotions. For instance, Mental constructs based upon expectations have a momentum that when thwarted leads to to the physical reaction that is the basis of a gamut of negative emotions: disappointment, anger, jealousy, and anxiety. This physical reaction takes time to move through the system. As it moves through the system, there is the danger that it could cause collateral damage. During this period of chemical pollution, great caution via Self-reflection must be exerted to avoid slipping off the Path onto problematic Sidepaths. This is Body's physical component. Further, to avoid future destructive outbursts of a similar nature, we must employ Self-reflection to purify Mind's mental constructs. Reiterating, Emotions, once they have been evoked, have a mental and physical component - each with a life of its own. After a negative emotional outburst it is helpful to pursue the purification of Body and Mind.
Because the Body consists purely of atoms, Newton's automatic laws rule her behavior. Our only influence on Body is via the mental energy of Mind. Consequently, the following discussion is going to focus primarily on the Mind purification.
• Of course the size of the emotional reaction is proportional to the energy that is generated and must be dissipated. Further the size of the reaction is also proportional to the attachment. Because of this intimate relation with the attachment, it’s much harder to deal with it and let go.
It is helpful to deal with the mental component on two levels, which we will call Fire and Water, after the Chinese Bagua System.
Water Purification is sometimes called the Yin Yang Bath. This is achieved deep in Meditation - when inner stillness is achieved and held. Stillness breaks, or at least slows, the Brain's internal momentum. The Yin Yang Bath washes the Left Brain in Experience - suspending judgment, quieting our critical faculties, standing silently in front of the Chasm, humbled by the incomprehensible Paradox of Life. This Bath in the Non-duality is the purification by Water in the Chinese Yin-Yang System.
Fire Purification is achieved by examining underlying assumptions - intensely, relentlessly, without mercy. This is the Purpose of Mind, whose main Tool is Self Reflection. One of the main underlying assumptions that Mind must deconstruct is that he and Brain are one and the same. In actuality they serve very different functions.
Mind's Tool is Self Reflection; Brain's Tool is Logic.
By Definition:
the function of Mind = ƒ(Mind) = Self-Reflection
the function of Brain = ƒ(Brain) = Logic
Application:
Mind's Self-Reflection applied to Brain's Logic = Metalogic
Brain's Logic applied to Mind's Self-Reflection = Paradox
Mind can employ Brain's tool, Logic, to assist in decision-making. However, Brain can’t understand Mind. Brain’s Logic is humbled by Mind’s Paradox. While Mind can use the Logic of the Brain as one of his tools, Brain cannot use the Mind’s Self Reflection as a tool. Paradox - a foundation of Mind’s Both-And Logic - freezes Brain’s Either-Or Logic. Through Self Reflection, Mind can experience Brain, while Brain’s Logic can’t experience Mind. However Brain can deduce that Mind exists.
Before Mind can purify his emotional connection with Body he must first extricate himself from his confused relation with Brain. Indeed differentiating Brain and Mind is a primary Purpose of Mind. However, while Mind fancies himself untainted by Brain, normally he is heavily attached to Brain. The Child and Parents need to wean themselves of each other when they are overly attached. As the Child breaks free naturally, the Parents need to let go. However frequently Brain as the Parent of Mind has not been wise enough to set Mind free. Thus one of the primary functions of Mind as the Child is to break this connection apart. It is necessary to clearly differentiate Brain and Mind - so that they can work individually or collectively - so that they are not tied to each other subconsciously. Mind must apply his tool of Self-Reflection to Brain to break the connections between them so that they can work together without distortion.
While Mind tends to view himself as the impersonal Observer, he rarely is. Unfortunately Mind is quite polluted with Brain. The unrefined or polluted Mind, the Mind Ore, is the Combination of the Purified Mind with the Brain. The Brain pollutes the Pure Mind to yield Mind Ore. To Return one must purify Mind’s ability to Self Reflect of Brain’s automatic connotations and preconceptions. A major problem is Brain’s tendency to conceptualize the World for simplicity.
While Mind tends to view himself as the impersonal Observer, he rarely is. Unfortunately Mind is quite polluted with Brain. This is represented symbolically as Mind*Brain. Where does this come from? To understand let us introduce the Pollution Equation for Mind and Brain.
The Unrefined self = Person*Self
Person = Body*Mind
Unrefined mind = Mind - i Brain
The unrefined or polluted Mind, the Mind Ore, is the Combination of the Purified Mind with the Imaginary component - which is the Brain. The Pure Mind is polluted by the Brain to yield Mind Ore. To Return one must purify Mind’s ability to Self Reflect of Brain’s automatic connotations and preconceptions. A major problem is Brain’s tendency to conceptualize the World for simplicity.
Borrowing from QED, we square the Pollution Equation to get the probability of manifesting the Unrefined Mind - the probability of polluted behavior from the polluted Mind/Brain complex. (Note: that this connection is metaphorical not quantitative.)
Probability of manifesting Unrefined mind, i.e. Polluted behavior:
P(mind) = (Mind - i Brain) 2 = Mind 2 - 2i Mind*Brain - Brain 2
(Remember i 2 = -1)
One of the first conclusions that can be seen from this equation is that the imaginary component takes away from the pure energy of the Mind in two ways. 1) Directly thru the component of ‘- Brain2’ which takes away directly from the Mind. Then 2) indirectly thru the ‘-2i Mind*Brain’ component, whose vector takes us off, in an imaginary or extraneous direction.
Each of these factors represent different vectors - which when added give the Power of Mind. If the Probability of Polluted Behavior is too high one never reaches the Threshold of Generation. Further if the Probability of Polluted Behavior is high enough one sinks below the Threshold of Degeneration. In both cases Transformation is not attained. The Firing Process is unsuccessful. This is why it is essential to Purify if Illumination is to be achieved. We will explore these confusing concepts in more detail in subsequent chapters.
